Remains of Former President Muhammadu Buhari Arrive in Katsina for Burial

The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari arrived at Umar Musa Yar’adua Airport in Katsina State on Tuesday, following his passing in a London hospital on Sunday.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led a high-level delegation to receive the late President's body, which was transported to Nigeria aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft. Also present at the airport were state governors, federal ministers, members of the National Assembly, and other top government officials.

From Katsina, the remains were scheduled to be taken to Buhari’s hometown of Daura, where funeral rites and final interment are to be held in accordance with Islamic tradition.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed on Monday during a press briefing in Abuja that the former President’s body would arrive in Nigeria by noon on Tuesday.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, will personally receive the remains of the former President in Katsina,” Idris stated. “A brief military ceremony will take place at the airport before the body is transported to Daura. The Jana’iza (funeral prayer) will follow shortly, along with the interment at the late President’s residence.”

As part of the national mourning, President Tinubu has directed that condolence registers be opened in all Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, as well as in Nigerian embassies and missions around the world. An additional condolence register will be available at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.

Minister Idris also noted that world leaders have been sending condolence messages, reflecting Buhari’s influence on the global stage.

“The tributes from Heads of State and Governments worldwide speak to the enduring legacy and international stature of President Muhammadu Buhari,” he added.
