Americans in Nigeria are alerted by the US embassy of impending visa overstay charges.




 An online immigration amnesty portal is open until the end of July to give impacted persons chance to adhere to immigration laws. Before the fines are applied, travelers can use the portal to regularize their stay.

Before July 31, 2025, US residents who are presently in Nigeria and have overstayed their visa are strongly advised to regularize their stay via the amnesty portal. If you don't, you risk severe financial penalties and permanent bans from entering Nigeria again. To prevent issues, all U.S. citizens are reminded to follow Nigerian visa requirements. The embassy further mentioned that, starting on May 1, 2025, Nigeria's Interior Ministry imposed $15 daily fee for each day visitor overstays their visa as part of larger immigration reforms. On July 31, 2025, an amnesty period will conclude, allowing people to regularize their status without facing penalties. Additionally, visitors who do not regularize their status before the conclusion of the amnesty period will be liable to the daily surcharge that has accrued after August 1. five-year ban on re-entry will be imposed for stays of six months or longer. 10-year re-entry restriction will be imposed for stays of one year or longer.
